Busy Bags

I have such a unique neighborhood.  Maybe not to the people around me, but compared to where I grew up, it is unique.  I know pretty much everyone within a half mile of my home.  I am serious.  I know their kids, I know their cars, and I know what days they go to the library (jk).  I am not going to lie, it has been an adjustment for the last eight years that I have lived here.  I grew up in California on a cul-de-sac.  There are 10 houses on it (I think) and growing up I knew who lived in most of them, but not all of them.  We saw everyone every once in awhile and I think I can remember having a block party twice in the 20+ years my family has lived there.  Things are just different here.  For the first few years I thought it so weird that people knew me more than I knew them.  They knew what was going on at my house, like if I had my carpets cleaned or family over.  But, I have gotten used to it and I really do love it now.  One of the best parts of my neighborhood is that there are SO many women in the same stage of life as me.  So many women that I can talk to and get ideas from.  It is really wonderful.  A lady a few streets away invited me to do this "Busy Bag" project she found out about on Pinterest.  I love projects so I jumped on the bandwagon.  Here is what we did:
Each person picked a small project and made multiple copies of them and then we all got together and swapped the projects.  It ended up being that there were 26 people involved (I am sure a lot more people would have done it, but I wasn't the one inviting).  So I ended up making 26 versions of my project and then just last night I was able to swap and now I have 26 different projects.  So what kind of projects were they?  They were little bags of games geared toward toddlers and preschoolers.  Being that Callie is our last I was a little hesitant to do it, but figured I could pass them on to siblings and friends when my kids were done.

This morning I was so excited to show Callie, and the other kids, some of the neat "busy bags" that I had gotten.  The most wonderful thing happened.  Callie sat at the little table and played with these new toys in a completely calm and peaceful manner.  Granted she has been sick, so anything calm was amazing and appreciated, but this was amazing.  She was SO focused and SO into the activities.  Needless to say we had a great day exploring all 26 activities and even Annabelle had a blast doing them.  Ryan and Nathan loved to help Callie (though she didn't always want the help) and it was cute to see them playing together, calmly.
Here are some of the websites we used to make this happen.  It took a little time, a little money, and some tedious cutting, but after having a day like today where my toddler is calm and focused, it was definitely worth it.

Update

After I got off the computer last night I was lamenting to Greg about Callie's sickness not going away.  He informed me that while I was at pack meeting with the rest of the kids he had a "talk" with Callie and basically told her she couldn't be sick anymore.  Well, it worked.  She only had one other coughing fit last night and all I had to do was give her some water and she went back to sleep.  Today wasn't perfect but it was 100% better than the past few days.  She hardly coughed, she didn't have a fever, and we actually got out of the house and got some things done.  She took another really long nap and is now in such good spirits still that she doesn't want to go to sleep.  I am tempted to use the Benadryl again but won't because I know she doesn't really need it.  I am so thankful that my kids are not sick forever.  I am so grateful to medicine and my family for putting up with Callie (and me) these last few days.  I am so grateful that we are through with this round of sickness and only hope we can last a month or 2 (or forever-I can hope!) before it comes to our home again.

Sickness

I try to keep my blog mostly upbeat, but motherhood isn't mostly upbeat so bear with me while I vent.  We have had some sickness in our home the last few weeks and I am done!  First Nathan had a bad cold, then me, then Annabelle and now Callie.  Ryan and Greg have had some days of sniffles but nothing  compared to the rest of us.  I hate sickness.  I am cranky and ornery and not a fun person to be around--whether it is me who is sick or one of my kids.  I apologize to anyone who has had to talk to me or be around me at these times (mostly that apology is for my Greg and the kids).
The worst is when a baby is sick.  They can't tell you exactly what is wrong.  They can't blow their nose.  They can't tell you what sounds good and they can't decipher hunger versus a stomach ache.  It is REALLY hard to help a young little one.  Don't get me wrong, I try to stay as upbeat as I can.  But sometimes, inside, I am screaming.  Okay, it comes out sometimes also.  Here is a picture from St. Patricks Day:

Callie coughed and cried and said, "Owie" all weekend long.  She couldn't tell us where the owie was, and I even put a few random band-aids on her body to help her out.  We have had the humidifier going, tylenol and advil have become her drink of choice, and her eating has been sparse.  I finally took her to the doctor on Monday because I couldn't' take it anymore.  FYI: I hate the doctor's office.  I especially hate taking my kids there and them telling me that nothing can be done.  I feel like I wasted my time and money after trips like those.  My older kids all had ear issues so usually when I took them in they had an ear infection or strep or pneumonia.  Callie on the other hand like to stick with viruses, the ones that nothing can be done about.  Once she had strep and I think a long time ago she had an ear infection but that is it.  This time was no different.  She was coughing and whining the whole time and the doc said things looked okay, nothing looked "bad enough."  He did say, "Call if things get worse."  I hate that phrase.  To me, waking up multiple times at night, holding a baby while I postpone going to the grocery store for a week and neglecting my other kids because I am holding said baby, is worse enough.
We grabbed some benadryl from the store (something I have never used but the doc recommended) and drove home.  Along the way she fell asleep.
I sat in the car for a bit and pondered what to do.  Would she take a nap if I let her sleep?  Would she stay asleep if I carried her inside?  After about 10  minutes I decided to bring her in...and she woke up.  Oh well, both yesterday and today she took 3+ hour naps and I was able to get some things done and give some attention to my other kids.  We have given her blessings, tried the benadryl (she was so drugged, it was really weird), and spent lots of time in the bath or bathroom with the hot water creating a sauna.  Some day things will be better.  Some day she will be healthy again.  She seemed a lot happier at bed time tonight, she even protested, loudly.  But I just heard her have a huge cough attack so no, tonight won't be the night.
I recently read something that really stuck out to me.

Wikipedia defines patience as “the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way; exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties.”

I have been praying for more patience, praying that I can have that quality I so admire in others.  And now I understand.  I have to be in the midst of crazy and be calm to understand patience.  This definition has helped me a little.  When things have gotten a little crazy, I am sometimes able to take a second and think, "OK, I am in a crazy moment, how am I going to react?"  It isn't easy, but acknowledging it helps a lot.
I could go on but her coughing isn't stopping so I will end my rant.  Here's to better days!!

Out With the Old and In With the New

Years and years ago we had Nathan and Ryan make some decor for the house.  I remember holding the paint brush in Ryan's hand so it was a REALLY long time ago.
The kids have started to notice these pictures and so I finally pulled out the paints on Sunday and let the 3 older kids create new masterpieces for our Kids Corner.  They were all so proud of their work and while I will miss the simplicity of the pictures of years gone by, I love the bright new pictures I get to look at every day.

St. Patrick's Day

We love "Green Day" around here and this year was no different.  Well, I guess it was a little different because my usual enthusiast in making traps, Nathan, decided that he was too old to make a trap.  How sad that he is starting to get "too old" for things.  Friday afternoon Ryan and Annabelle (she was the most excited) set to work finding boxes, getting them decorated and thinking just what would be the perfect thing to lure a leprechaun into their trap.
The next day was filled with all things green.  We had green french toast for breakfast.

Green sandwiches for lunch.

Green smoothie for a snack.

Corned Beef and Cabbage for dinner.  Oh how we all love that dinner, I always buy two corned beefs and I can't wait to pull out the other one.

Green Pudding for dessert.

Of course we were all festive and wearing green.  I love my Annabelle and her concoctions of an outfit.  She looks similar to this every day, and yes I let her go to school in such outfits.  I love them.  They make me happy.  Someday she will care because other people will tell her to, but for now i love the variety and surprise every morning.

Mother-Daughter Date

Greg and I are pretty good at taking the kids out on one-on-one dates.  We have decided that they are VERY important, for all of us.  The kids need to feel special and have time to just talk to us and at the same time we need to take time and focus on just them.  They are so fun and talkative and calm when they are by themselves.  My niece, Kirienn was in a performance called "The Power of One" and Sarah and I decided to take our girls to support their cousin.  It was a little long for the girls, but Annabelle loved watching all the dancers and see their different outfits.  We went out to eat afterwards and let the kids run around in a playground.  They really needed that and it was fun to hear them laugh and play together.

Ryan's Baptism

Ryan was so excited to get baptized on March 3.  I was able to go with him to his interview with the bishop.  He was so charismatic as the bishop asked him questions about what he believed and about his testimony.  When the bishop asked him about the Holy Ghost he jumped in and told a story about a time when he, Nathan and Annabelle were walking home from church and a neighbor's dog came chasing them and jumped on Annie.  I had driven home and felt the Holy Ghost prompt me to come check on them.  And sure enough, Annie needed some help.  I love that Ryan remembered something like that.  I am so grateful that my children are in tune with the spirit.
Ryan normally isn't one to get dressed quickly, for school or church or anything.  But the morning he was getting baptized he got dressed so quickly and reverently.  He didn't fight with anyone and just got ready without my nagging him.
My boys are so handsome and I am so thankful that Greg is a worthy priesthood holder and was able to baptize Ryan.
I love my Ry-guy and I am so proud of his decision to get baptized.  We had a lot of family in town to make Ryan feel special and while I didn't get any pictures of them, I am so thankful they came and supported us.  We had a yummy brunch afterwards and enjoyed playing with cousins and chatting with Aunts and Uncles, Grandma and Grandpas.

Snowmen, Finally!!

We finally had some snow and we were able to make some big snow men.  Even Callie joined in the fun, with my help.  While the boys didn't do much decorating of their snow men, Annabelle was so adamant that she needed to have a face and arms.  Callie loved putting her face together.  It was a fun snow day, but we have had some beautiful spring days lately and I am loving them.  I also have lots of daffodils up since my house faces south and they make me very happy when I see them.

Cub Scouts Galore!

With Ryan turning 8 years old he was able to start cub scouts.  He was SO excited!!  He has watched Nathan and I over the last 4 and a 1/2 years and was ready for it to be his turn.  The first step as a wolf is to earn the Bobcat award, and Ryan made sure he did that in the first few days of being a cub.  He and Greg just kept going in the book and kept passing things off.
Nathan is now a Webelos scout.  I don't know as much about that age group as the younger ones, but so far Nathan has had a blast.  He has great leaders that are so on top of things and Nathan has already earned 3 activity badges.  This weekend he even gets to go to a rock show.

And surprise!  I am a cub scout leader again!  I get to be Ryan's leader and I am really excited.  I still "get" to teach roundtable and be a Unit Commissioner, but now I get to do the fun part of cub scouting again.  I am also excited to be able to apply all that I am learning about with my commissioner position.  I love these boys in their uniforms!!

Basketball Season Finale

What a basketball season!  The boys got better and better all season long.  While both boys have different approaches to sports, it was fun to watch them both improve and learn.  I can't remember how many baskets Ry got for his last game but there was more than two.  He is always running and going for the ball.  I love watching him cheer for his team and pass the balls when he is in a tough spot.  Nathan started out a little apprehensive this season and this last game he did a 360 turn around.  He was running, passing, making a couple baskets, and the kids on his team were even passing to him because he was "on fire."  It was so fun to watch.  He was really enjoying himself.  I am so proud of both of my boys and all their hard work.  The girls mostly did a great job with our weekly sports events and so I am happy to have my Thursday nights back, but I look forward to the upcoming baseball season.  We haven't done that sport for 4 years, and I am sure regular baseball is nothing like t-ball.

Greg's Birthday

For Greg's birthday I had a secret birthday date planned for the two of us.  Grandma Pam was awesome, like usual, and volunteered to baby-sit for us in the morning.  I decided that we should go to the beach for his birthday.  And since Utah is a bit landlocked I found this cool place in Provo:
http://www.provobeachresort.com/things-to-do/indoor-flowrider.html
I didn't tell Greg anything until the morning, and then all I told him was, "We are going to the beach."  He was a little concerned since the only thing that resembles a beach is Utah Lake, and it is stinky and cold and not really a fun place to go.  As we got closer I told him where we were going and what we were going to do and he got a little excited.
When we go to Provo Beach Resort we REALLY lucked out and we are able to get on the flow rider right away.  There were only 2 other people there so we got a whole side of the flowrider to ourselves.  Thankfully, a nice girl taught us how to surf, though she was still helping me at the end.  Greg figured things out and was able to start on his own, but I always started with the rope.  The water is REALLY powerful and when I fell, I fell hard.  My body would fly up the hill and cracks were heard all over the place.  I got better and learned how to fall more gracefully.  After an hour we relaxes in the hot tub before trying the ropes course.  That was a lot of fun and we looked forward to taking the boys there soon.  Next up was lunch.  We went to Tucanos and stuffed ourselves with all kinds of yummy meats.  We had fun talking and remembering the last many years and enjoying the food.  On the way home we got Greg's car washed, for free.  I love little perks like that.  Firehouse gives you a free car wash on your birthday.
When we got home Callie was asleep and the sun was shining.  We spent the majority of the rest of the day outdoors.  Playing Bocci ball, running around, pulling weeds and enjoying each other.  The kids and grandma made a peach cake for Greg so we all enjoyed that for dinner.
While Greg doesn't love a big deal made out of his birthday, I think he had a fun day and we all loved making him feel special and spoiling him.
